Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a well researched, secular, intensive 8-week course designed to empower participants through meditative awareness to take an active role in the management of their health and wellness. MBSR teaches the practice of mindfulness through meditation, yoga, and awareness brought into our everyday lives. This course is modeled on the MBSR program pioneered by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. and Saki Santorelli, Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Currently, there are over 200 medical centers in the United States and Europe that teach MBSR programs, plus many other health related organizations worldwide.

8 weekly classes -  Tuesday evenings starting April 11, 2017 from 6PM to 8PM, except for the first and last class in the series which ends at 8:30 pm. One experiential retreat for this course is Saturday May 20, 2017; 10am-4pm.

Who Will Benefit

Two decades of published research indicate that the majority of people who complete the 8-week program report greater ability to cope more effectively with both short- and long-term stressful situations. By learning to actively participate in the management of health and well being, many participants report they are better able to manage stress, fear, anger, anxiety and depression both at home and in the workplace. People taking the MBSR class come from all walks of life, but they share one thing in common: the desire to find more balance, peace and happiness in their lives.

What to Expect

Weekly classes will include lecture, group discussion and experiential learning, with an all-day Saturday session after the 6th week. Participants are asked to practice mindfulness meditation and/or mindful movement for 45-60 minutes a day. The 8-week course will include:

  • Guided instruction in a variety of mindfulness meditation practices
  • Gentle stretching and mindful movement
  • Practices for integrating mindfulness into daily life
  • Group dialogue and discussions aimed at enhancing awareness in everyday life 
  • Email and phone support
  • Home practice materials (audio CDs and written handouts) 

Instructors: Janka Livoncova, LMT, E-RYT500 is registered yoga teacher with the Yoga Alliance and licensed massage therapist. She has been practicing meditation and yoga since 1994 and teaching since 2004. In 2007, Janka began studying meditation and mindfulness with Daeja Napier and with Thanissara and Kittisaro in 2010. She is currently enrolled in the 2 year Community Dharma Leader Training Program at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in California. Janka is also a student in the Body-Mind Centering® Somatic Movement Education program at Kinetic Learning Center in Durham, NC. She has completed the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction in Mind-Body Medicine, professional training program under the direction of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn and Dr. Saki Santorelli, and has been leading 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction courses at the Center for Mindful Living since January 2013. Janka maintains a daily meditation practice and regularly attends meditation retreats. She also regularly leads and facilitates meditation and mindfulness classes in Chattanooga.


Rod Francis -As well as a diverse career through international performing arts and business, Rod has been teaching for almost 30 years and coaching & mentoring for over a decade. He is currently working alongside leading mind/body expert Dr Mark Atkinson creating and delivering the Bulletproof Coach Training program, and has trained with numerous leaders from the worlds of coaching, personal development and Positive Psychology.

Rod has had a meditation practice for approximately three decades and has sat many teacher led retreats in the Insight tradition including several with his guiding teacher Yanai Postelnik. Rod also sat the MBSR in Mind Body Medicine retreat with the program’s founder Jon Kabat-Zinn and is currently formally qualifying as an MBSR teacher with the Umass teacher program.
