Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a scientifically validated, secular, intensive 8-week course designed to empower participants through meditative awareness to take an active role in the management of their own health and wellness. MBSR teaches the practice of mindfulness through meditation, yoga, and awareness brought into our everyday lives. This course was pioneered by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. and Saki Santorelli, Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and completely revised in 2014. Currently, there are over 200 medical centers and many other health related organizations  in the United States and Europe that teach MBSR programs. It consists of eight 2.5-hour weekly classes and one 7-hour experiential retreat held on Saturday. In total there are 27 in person class hours.

On Friday January the 5th at 6pm there will be a one hour intake and orientation class conducted online on the zoom platform. On Friday morning (1/5/18) you will be sent a link and can attend either via computer or phone.


Who Will Benefit


Three decades of published research indicates that the majority of people who complete the 8-week program report greater ability  to cope more effectively with both short- and long-term stressful situations. By learning to actively participate in the management of their health and well being, many participants report they are better able to manage stress, fear, anger, anxiety and depression both at home and in the workplace. Though people taking the MBSR class may come from all walks of life, they share one thing in common: a desire to find more balance, peace and happiness in their lives.


What to Expect

Weekly classes will include lecture, group discussion and experiential learning, with an all-day Saturday session after the 6th week. Participants are asked to practice mindfulness meditation and/or mindful movement for 45-60 minutes a day. The 8-week course will include:
  • Guided instruction in a variety of mindfulness meditation practices.

  • Gentle stretching and mindful movement.

  • Practices for integrating mindfulness into daily life.

  • Group dialogue and discussions aimed at enhancing awareness in everyday life. 

  • Email and phone support.

  • Dedicated learning platform with home practice materials (audio downloads and written handouts) and additional instructional videos.



Instructors: Janka Livoncova, is an Insight Meditation Teacher, Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT 500), Licensed Massage Therapist and a trained Somatic Movement Educator. She has been a dedicated student and practitioner of meditation and yoga since 1994 and started sharing her practice with others in 2004. Janka has been practicing and studying the dharma for two decades. First in the Soto Zen tradition and, since 2007, under the guidance of her mentor, DaeJa Napier. She maintains a daily meditation practice and regularly attends Vipassana retreats with her dharma teachers. A graduate of Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leaders Program, Janka leads the Chattanooga Insight Group. Janka completed the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction in Mind-Body Medicine professional training program under the direction of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn and Dr. Saki Santorelli. She has been leading the 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction courses and other mindfulness programs at the Center for Mindful Living since they opened in January 2013.


Rod Francis -As well as a diverse career through international performing arts and business, Rod has been teaching for almost 30 years and coaching & mentoring for over a decade. He is currently working alongside leading mind/body expert Dr Mark Atkinson creating and delivering the Bulletproof Coach Training program, and has trained with numerous leaders from the worlds of coaching, personal development and Positive Psychology.

Rod has had a meditation practice for approximately three decades and has sat many teacher led retreats in the Insight tradition including several with his guiding teacher Yanai Postelnik. Rod also sat the MBSR in Mind Body Medicine retreat with the program’s founder Jon Kabat-Zinn and is currently formally qualifying as an MBSR teacher with the Umass teacher program.
